World Oceans Day 8 June, 2024: Theme, Significance, History, Purpose, Activities and Celebration Ideas
World Oceans Day is celebrated worldwide on every June
8 to raise awareness of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a
global citizen movement for the ocean, and work together as united team of
world’s people for the sustainable management of the world's oceans. This is
the fantastic initiative of the United Nations and really helps
our nature restore the ecosystem.
Significance of World Oceans Day 2024
World Oceans Day reminds people about the importance
of the oceans in human life. The oceans are the main source of food and
medicine and a fundamental part of the biosphere, covering more than 70% of our
planet. It is the lifeline for humans and the home of many species, producing
approximately 50% of the planet's oxygen.
Among all species on
earth, Human is the main consumer of ocean resources and at the same time
responsible for the destruction of the marine ecosystem. Observing World
Oceans Day enables the media to educate people about the importance of
the oceans to human life and how to preserve and protect the marine ecosystem for
sustainable development.
Theme of World Oceans Day 2024
With reference to next 10
years goal for sustainable development 14, “Conserve and sustainably use the
oceans, seas and marine resources”, by 2030, United Nations declared the
Theme for World Oceans Day 2024 is “The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods”
As humans, we are the major
consumer of the earth's resources and are the most beneficial species. It is
therefore our primary responsibility to take corrective measures against the
damage caused by us, to improve oceans biodiversity through
scientific management.

Objective of World Oceans Day 2024 observance
It is observed that due
to human interference with ocean life, about 90% of the populations of large
fish have become depleted and 50% of coral reefs destroyed. This clearly
reveals that humans get more from the ocean than they can replenish.
To protect and preserve
the ocean, we must work to restore the ecosystem by creating a new balance. It
is now necessary for human to truly understand the oceans, educate people about
the importance of the oceans, draw attention and call for action to repair the
damage. It is also important to understand the enduring goal of recovery and
how humanity relates to it.
The main objective of
observing the World Oceans Day is to raise awareness about the recognition of the
importance of the oceans in human life and how to restore them scientifically.
Another goal is to respect the ocean by understanding the importance of
the ocean
ecosystem and the resources that humans consume from the ocean.
For sustainable
development, World Oceans Days are observed to sensitize people to the
conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources, as well
as the protection and restoration of the marine ecosystem.

The prime objective of
World Oceans Day 2021 is to raise awareness of the wonders of the ocean and how
it is our source of life, supporting humanity and all other organisms on Earth.
History of World Oceans Day 2021
World Oceans Day is celebrated on June
8 of each year since 2008 after officially recognized by United Nation.
International Center for Ocean Development (ICOD) of Canada and the Ocean
Institute of Canada (OIC) originally proposed the concept of Word
Oceans Day in 1992 at the United Nations Conference (Earth Summit) on
Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
In 2002- the oceans
project become global, in 2003- “worldoceanday.org” website launched to support
the event organizers globally, in 2008- United Nations officially recognized 8
June as World Oceans Day, in 2016-World Oceans Day Youth Advisory Council
launched, 2020 was the world of virtual media and mass awareness campaign on
World Oceans Day.
The basic objective of celebrating
World Ocean Day
is to connect the people with oceans by raising awareness on importance of
marine ecosystem in human’s life and how people can preserve and protect oceans
scientifically and emotionally.
In 2008, the oceans project
and the world oceans network, first time introduced the theme for world ocean
Day and the theme was “Helping our climate / helping our ocean"

of the activities are planned and communicated worldwide via website –

community.

24 hrs live stream event, you can learn more about conservation effort and
environmental topics and join the movement to take action to protect preserve, and
restore Oceans. Because of COVID-19 Pandemic, Most of the activities are
planned online/ virtual.
