World Food Safety Day 2024 – History, Theme, Slogans, posters and how to observe effectively
World Food Safety
Day: Healthy food is essential for everyone to stay healthy forever. Every
year on June 7, World Food Safety Day is observed to draw attention and
call for action to help prevent, detect and manage the risks of foodborne diseases
contributing to food safety for human health.
Food safety
includes production, handling, preparation and storage of food in a way that
prevents foodborne diseases. This includes a number of routines that must be
followed to avoid potentially serious health risks.
Food can transmit
diseases from person to person and serve as a growth medium for bacteria that
can cause food poisoning. In developed countries there are complex standards
for food preparation, while in less developed countries the main problem is
simply the availability of adequate drinking water, which is often a critical
issue.

History of World Food Safety Day
The World Health
Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United
Nations (FAO) jointly facilitate the observance of World Food Safety Day, in
collaboration with Member States and other relevant organizations.
Foodborne diseases affects individuals
of all ages, in particular children under-5 and persons living in low-income
countries. Peoples are not getting healthy food because of poverty or due to
lack of healthy food supply. Recognizing all these problems, the United Nations
General Assembly (UNGA), in 2018, proclaimed that every 7 June would be observed as
World Food Safety Day to draw attention and call for action to help
prevent, detect and manage food-borne diseases risks, contributing to food
safety, human health, economic prosperity, agriculture, market access, tourism
and sustainable development.

Who is responsible for managing food safety?
There are three
main factors that influence food safety, viz. Producer, consumer and regulator
and, therefore, it is a shared responsibility between producers, consumers and
the regulator i.e. governments.
The World Health
Organization (WHO) is helping by providing guidelines and publication material
for the public awareness campaign for World Food Safety Day. It also works
to put food safety on the public agenda and reduce the burden of foodborne
illness around the world.

How to ensure food safety?
The
producer, the consumer and the regulator are jointly responsible for food
safety.
The
producer must adopt good practices to grow food safely. He must not use
chemicals toxic to humans on crops, fruits and vegetables.
Commercial
operators must store and preserve food safely.
The
regulator must ensure healthy and nutritious food for all.
Consumers
must be able to identify healthy foods and should educate themselves about
healthy and wholesome foods.

How to observe Food Safety Day 2021
In this COVID-19 pandemic, it is difficult to
organize physical events and therefore the best way is to organize the virtual
media. But the area which is not badly affected by COVID, outdoor activities encouraging
people to be physically active can be a good way to raise awareness on food
safety.
Prepare posters with eye catching slogans on
food safety and organize talks with demonstrations on food safety. Regulatory body
can organize the talk and demonstrations on food safety for public including
producer, business traders, process operators, sales personnel, cook,
shopkeepers, etc and make them aware about food safety, the right procedure of
farming, storage and transportation. Peoples must be made aware about how to
choose the right food and how to maintain the hygiene.
The best participant for the food safety
campaign is students, they are the right people who can understand the importance
of food safety and adopt the best practices from their childhood to become a culture.
This can be in a school, workplace or community space.
Several media can be used to spread awareness
on Food safety including virtual i.e. video, the talk or demonstration which
can be shared on mobile or a social media platform. Poster on food safety can
be displayed at prominent locations. Share food safety images with food safety
quotes and encourage comments and discussions or even make it a social media
live event so your guest can answer viewer questions.
Press media and TV broadcast may be the best media
to spread awareness on Food safety, they can be used for sharing food safety
knowledge through interviews, advertisement, running short movies, talk shows
or media briefings.
At Industrial, businesses, office and other
corporate level, you can organize a slogan competition, Poster or photography
competitions around a theme, Drawing competition for students of school and universities
or children in communities. Engage youth Involve students in food safety
activities at schools this way young people can learn about food safety and
pass on the message that by changing simple day-to-day actions, they can avoid
the perils of foodborne.
At community level, you can organize healthy food preparation competition so that most of the ladies can participate which may be the best media to make the ladies aware about food safety. You can encourage participants to find out about food safety and visualize what they learn to pass the message on.
Create a image collage on food safety
practices and publish in website or social media as an exhibition that shows
food safety in action. To make it virtual, upload your images to an online
gallery, give access to view to public. Encourage others to participate by
adding their images which definitely be a comprehensive look at food safety
from different perspectives.
Conduct an interview with food safety experts
and record the best practices of a production, storage, business and consumption
and then share the interview video with friends, colleagues, classmates or
fellow students.

World Food Safety Day is observed
on June 7 every year and the theme for World Environment Day 2021
is rightly chosen as "Safe Food Now for a Healthy Tomorrow"
in consideration of the current pandemic of COVID-19 because eating
a healthy diet helps us improve our immune system. The important factor in
avoiding food contamination is good hygiene. Always wash your hands, pots and
pans to maintain hygiene because healthy food now for a healthy future.
